An interesting philosophical short could be written with characters based on Kierkegaard‘s 3 stages of philosophical worldviews – Aesthetic, Ethical and Religious which he describes in his book Either/Or. The central Aristotelian question: how is life to be lived?
- The Aesthetic character would be something of an artistic hedonist, constantly seeking new experience to avoid boredom and pain.
- The Ethical character could be something of an exemplary citizen – a judge or professor or soldier – who honors social duty above all else.
- The Religious character could be a priest, or anyone really… would be much more interesting if this character were a criminal or lowlife.
While many read Kierkegaard’s philosophy as elevating the religious worldview to the “highest” stage, this is certainly debatable. An interesting story would attempt to show a real life interaction of how these three stages can co-exist… or can’t. This is most likely a very wordy script – a cheap film but definitely marketable to the right niche of thinking people. Maybe even great philosophy 101 discussion material. Maybe in the same vein as Coffee and Cigarettes.
I thought of this while listening to Nigel Warburton’s podcast on Kierkegaard while on the plane back from Rome yesterday.
