The stuff that dreams are made of.

Dream World, Same Actor, Kierkegaard

Some time ago I had an idea that was original and not conventional. I thought of a fantasy world in which three characters are on a journey, afloat on a mystical river in an open coffin. Each embodies one third of Aristotle’s tripartite soul. They travel through a (high budget) Narnian world–where waterfalls flow upside-down, for example. The story has themes and scenes adapted from The Odyssey, Dante’s Comedia, Moby Dick and a slew of classics.

But here is the hook, that jives with your Kierkegaard concept: all three characters are played by the same actor. Think Adaptation with Nicholas Cage, plus one, with even more contrast. It’s a role that actors would kill for. A perfect showcase that digs right into the core complexities of human nature. And it says so much about how everyone has each of these parts to various degrees. There is a hero and a villain in each one. But maybe we could embody the villain(s) too. And a Beatrice.

I should also say that I much prefer your idea of keeping the setting cheap. My fantasy world doesn’t work with this concept. It might work for a kids’ story (in the vein of Lemony Snicket’s: A Series of Unfortunate Events), but for our purposes something grittier and simpler is needed.

Traveling Acrobats doc idea

Seeing some of the amazing street performers in Rome’s Piazza Navona tonight made me think of a cool doc idea. These incredible acrobats and fire jugglers travel from city to city just livin’ and making money from enthralled crowds. The ambiance, monumental backdrops, colorful imagery, characters, relationships and story possibilities are rich. And these people are real. Some facts are more revealing, striking and beautiful than fiction. Somebody just needs to write, direct it and produce it.

Inspiration and Education

INSPIRATION: imagine something similar to the Australian show Hollow Men (clip below) set in the White House.  It’s a whip-smart comedy that basically thrives on the inefficiency and tail-chasing of government.  The Office meets West Wing.

Hollow Men

ok, and a bit of EDUCATION:  Stand on the shoulders of giants.  Learn all the tricks of those who succeed, and beat them with agility and learn from their mistakes.
